The McLaren driver edged out team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the final moments of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who seized the title advantage from his teammate by a single point after his victory in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, outpaced the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before the sprint shootout set to begin at 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the only other driver in realistic title contention, trailing with a 36-point deficit Norris, ended up in P17 as his team ran a unique setup. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to crash, if briefly, when he spun at the fourth corner early in the session. Tsunoda spun out over the curbs on exit before rotating through the escape zone, and was fortunate to get away with just a light touch of the fence. Ferrari's the seven-time champion also spun, at the very end of the practice, rotating twice through the high-speed Mergulho corner before the final bend on to the start-finish straight. The veteran ended the session in P19, one place behind teammate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren drivers were well clear of the other competitors, with Nico Hulkenberg's car third fastest, 0.619secs off Piastri's best. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto fifth from Mercedes' Russell and Alpine's Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
